3 Days 2 Nights

Discover extraordinary biodiversity of Poland on our exclusive birding tour to Biebrza Marshes, where you’ll witness the remarkable migration of various avian species amidst breathtaking natural beauty of Biebrza national park. This meticulously crafted journey offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore pristine habitats so rich in wildlife.

There are places in Europe where spring arrives quietly… and there are places where it arrives with wings. The Biebrza Marshes, protected within Biebrza National Park, are one of those rare landscapes where the season does not simply change — it just explodes into life. As the ice releases its grip and the river floods the vast peatlands, thousands upon thousands of migratory birds descend on the valley. For birdwatchers, it is one of the most thrilling moments of the entire year.

This early spring birdwatching tour is designed to experience this extraordinary migration at its peak.

A Wetland Awakening

In March the Biebrza River Valley becomes a shallow inland sea. Snowmelt from surrounding forests spreads across meadows and sedge marshes, creating immense feeding grounds for migrating birds travelling between southern Europe and their northern breeding territories.

At dawn, the marshes fill with sound. The honking of geese and trumpeting call of cranes carries across the foggy wetlands, while flocks of ducks whirl above flooded meadows. The sky can suddenly darken as thousands of birds rise at once from the water.

For nature lovers, it is a moment that stays in memory forever.

Migratory Geese: The Voice of the Marshes

Early spring in Biebrza is especially famous for large gatherings of migratory geese. Vast flocks stop here to rest and refuel before continuing their journey north. Among the most characteristic species are: Greylag Goose, White-fronted Goose, Bean Goose. And Red-breasted or Barnacle geese are not rare.

During peak migration, tens of thousands of geese gather in the valley. Watching their departures from night roosts to vast meadows nearby is one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles in whole Europe.

All Kind of Ducks

The shallow floodplains also attract remarkable numbers of migratory ducks. Calm water, rich vegetation, and abundant invertebrates create perfect feeding conditions. Among the species regularly observed are: Goldeneye, Garganey, Northern Pintail, Eurasian Wigeon, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Common Teal.

Large mixed flocks often gather on flooded meadows, providing excellent opportunities for observation and photography.

Waders Returning from the South

As spring progresses, in April the marshes begin to fill also with waders returning from Africa and the Mediterranean. These elegant birds probe the soft mud of the wetlands in search of food. Commonly seen species include: Black-tailed Godwit, Common Redshank, Green and Wood Sandpipers, Northern Lapwing, Ruff – in full breeding plumage.

The bubbling calls of displaying lapwings and the aerial dances of ruffs add a dynamic element to the spring landscape.

Raptors Above the Wetlands

Where there are thousands of birds, predators are never far away. The open marshes provide ideal hunting grounds for raptors such as the: White-tailed Eagle, Northern Marsh and Montagu’s Harrier, Peregrine, Rough-legged Buzzard.

Seeing huge White-tailed Eagle gliding low over a flock of ducks, sending them exploding into the air, is a moment that defines wild Poland.

Exploring One of Europe’s Last Wild Wetlands

The tour takes place in carefully selected locations across Biebrza National Park, and its surroundings, including watch-towers, boardwalks and best observation points overlooking the most productive floodplain habitats.
