Discover a very last remnant of the old riverine forest that was covering most of European lowland centuries ago. Birding there is like stepping back hundreds of years!
Just imagine that average age of the Bialowieza forest tree stands are far over 130 years and 400-600 years old trees are not rare! Even more incredible is the biodiversity of fauna – approx. 58 species of mammals, around 250 bird species and 9200 species of insects plus 13 species of amphibians. This just Bialowieza Forest National Park put under highest protection.
For hundreds of years, the Białowieża Forest was preserved as a royal hunting ground, sparing it from the widespread logging that claimed other woodlands. This protection allowed the European bison—the forest’s most iconic and powerful figure—to endure here longer than anywhere else. While the bison is its most famous resident, the Forest is home to many other equally precious species, especially woodpeckers, owls and flycatchers.
Or imagine a completely different world – endless open space of Biebrza marshes. The shimmering water among the sedges reflecting the blue sky. Mist rising at sunrise. Trumpeting calls of eurasian cranes. Waders and warblers everywhere – these are the Biebrza Marshes—the heart of Biebrza National Park. This is the largest national park in Poland and one of the most important wetland ecosystems in Europe, protected under the Ramsar Convention.
In Biebrza river valley alone, you can find:
Over 750 species of butterflies and moths
270+ bird species
48 species of mammals
13 amphibians
5 reptiles
36 fish species
Species focused expedition
Show us your bird wish-list, and we’ll do everything we can to help you spot them and tick off!
We perfectly understand that every traveler has different interests, travel dates and expectations. Some of our guests prefer relaxed nature holidays, while others are searching for specific bird species or planning a focused photography expedition.
These areas are truly one of a kind because its natural rhythms have continued without pause for centuries, shielded from significant human impact. This continuity is a rare marvel on the European continent. The forest’s giant trees are more than just plants; they are individual worlds that support a vast array of specialized life forms, sustaining them through every stage of the tree’s existence and eventual decay.
This makes these both areas one of Europe’s top hotspots for biodiversity.
And for birders? It’s a paradise!
